I was the communications officer for Hill-Kitt my first year and a JC last year so I am looking for a way to continue to be involved in dorm life. I think that hall council plays an essential role in creating community in dorms, especially in upperclassmen dorms where getting to know people isn’t usually the priority. Communications officer is a good fit for me because I enjoy marketing and planning events, working with groups, and solving problems to improve quality of experiences.
Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
I took over the role of communications officer for second semester of my first year, so I have experience with the role (and how to put gifs in emails!). My work as a JC and my internships in event planning and executing have also prepared me for this position. As a social work major, I’m learning how to engage with communities and consider many points of view. Overall, I’m organized and passionate about creating good work!
How would you ensure that residents are well-informed and involved in hall initiatives and programming?
The first step in getting a good turn out is planning events that people want to go to, so I would start there. Beyond that, I’ll send timely and informative emails. I’m also interested in getting resident feedback on events, so I’ll send out surveys and gauge resident interest at events.

My time at St. Olaf helped me realize that I enjoy the organization and implementation of events and plans. I enjoy meeting new people and creating meaningful relationships through my activities, hobbies, and interests. Gaining the trust of my fellow students and continually working to fulfill their expectations, hopes, and needs is imperative to me. Being Hall President is an opportunity to do these things in the place that I call home.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.

With previous experience on Hall Council and with Res Life, I understand the responsibilities and importance of a strong community presence in a dorm hall. I am willing and able to work with a team to design events that best represent the interests and diversity of the students that live in this hall. In addition, I possess the organizational, leadership, and communication skills necessary to voice our decisions and be a leading figure to the council and dorm.

What programs would you like to see in your hall this year?

Ytterboe is a dorm of primarily upper-class student. I recognize and understand that at this point, students have already filled their schedules and dedicate most of their free time to studying and doing their homework. In my experience, the most successful events are those which focus on efficiency and most frequently food. I plan developing events based on these ideals that also foster a welcoming and exciting environment for all.

What do you know about the Student Senate?

I know that Student Senate addresses a variety of problems that pertain to different groups on campus and they try to help all different types of people on campus. They have done things to improve campus or gotten involved in issues that students find important.

Tell us why you are interested in this position.

I am interested in this position because I want to be involved with the dorm and the campus. I love meeting people and by getting involved with the dorm, I’ll get to know the people I live with. I’m also really interested in helping make a change on campus and getting to know that the students themselves want changed and what they feel passionate about.

What skills/interests/etc. would you bring to this position?

I am very detail oriented and bubbly. I love to be hands-on and get involved in as much as can. To do that, I want to be as helpful as I can be. When an issue arises or when putting on an event, I’m all in and try to make sure everything is perfect down to the last detail. Since I’m bubbly and outgoing, I’d talk to as many people as I can and listen to their opinions on what they want.

What is one thing you would like to see Senate address this year?

Something that I’d like to see Senate address this year is making mental health a bigger priority. Mental health is something that is addressed here at St. Olaf, but I think there can be more done to help people. Such as making sure there are more resources to help the amount of students that are on campus, and making it known about the help that is offered and for students to take advantage of the help available.

I’ve been treasurer of Kittelsby Hall (2015-2016), Thorson Hall (2016-2017), and Rand (2018-2019). I am currently a junior; I come into the position with the same if not more vigor than I did when I first started the position. I truly enjoy supporting others by helping organizations and individuals reach their financial goals. I want Ytterboe Hall to be fully funded, and well within budget, so that St. Olaf students can continue to enjoy all the extracurricular activities currently available to them and more.

Tell us why you are interested in this position. I participated in hall council the last two years as a corridor representative and I would like to continue being a part of hall council. This year, I would like to take on an elected position so that I can be more involved than I was in the past. I really enjoyed being a part of hall council and this seems like a good way to have more of an impact. Out of all the positions this is the one that best suits me.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position. As I mentioned before, I have experience being a part of hall council. Even though I was not the treasurer I have an idea of how hall council works and its various responsibilities. This means that I have been part of budgeting conversations related to hall council and I have some experience in knowing how much different things cost, or at least how to find out. Even though I can be soft spoken, I am diligent in my work. I enjoy the logistics of planning events which I did even in high school student council and I always like seeing people enjoy the events that I helped plan. I am also a good listener which makes me a good group member.

What are some skills you possess that would be advantageous for managing hall finances? I am very organized and detail orientated both in school and out. I always like to double and triple check my work to try to minimize errors. I am good at using spreadsheets to keep numbers orientated for research projects which will help in managing finances. I would even say I enjoy making spreadsheets. I have experience managing my own finances both on campus and while studying abroad which takes a lot of self control and the ability to determine what expenses are necessary and which ones are not.

I am interested in this position because I’d like to make Ytterboe feel like a welcoming community for all residents. I love the close friendships/family feeling that is made within a dorm and I want to help make the building feel that way for all. The dorm is such an important living space for students and it should feel inclusive & welcoming towards all. My closest friendships have been formed inside a dorm, opposed to a classroom, and everyone should have the opportunity to create close lasting friendships in a welcoming environment. Additionally, the dorm should feel like a safe space to do so.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.

I have experience in community building and engagement through serving as a JC for Hill-Kitt the past two years. I have strong leadership, communication and organizational skills that would make me a good fit for the position. I am passionate about creating events that build community and feel that the IA position is a great way to contribute to that community.

How do you intend on encouraging and foster an inclusive environment in your residence hall?

I plan on encouraging/fostering an inclusive environment in Ytterboe by having a variety of events throughout the year. I will be mindful of language used to communicate with the hall and foods served at events. Additionally, I will act as an ally to fellow classmates to help them feel their identity is valued in the dorm and at St. Olaf. I will also be receptive of feedback and critique to allow for open communication between hall council and residents.
