I’m interested in this position because I want to be apart of my St. Olaf community. I think a fantastic way in which I can accomplish this achievement is through participating in Hall Council as Hall Communications Officer. By keeping everyone up-to-date on all of the events, meetings, etc. I hope I can engage the community of Kittlesby through effective and exciting emails. Additionally, I would also like to run for this position so I can add my ideas to make this community the best it can be. I hope this year in Kittlesby we can develop a close-knit, welcoming, and active community.
Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
I’m pretty organized and like to stay informed of all the events going on around campus just in case I need something to do. I also love to have fun, participate, and be active in my community (hence the reason for why I’m running for Hall Council). I have lots of ideas I would like to present to the Hall Council, including fun social events, volunteering events, and studying events. I’m excited to get involved this year, and even if I don’t get the Communications Officer position, I will still try to stay involved by becoming a hall representative.
How would you ensure that residents are well-informed and involved in hall initiatives and programming?
If I am elected I will send weekly emails most likely on Sunday mornings/afternoons so that residents get informed for their upcoming week on the events and hall initiatives going on; if needed I might send semi-weekly emails. If I get elected as Communications Officer, I will adjust as needed with whichever way seems to be more productive. Another idea that has come to mind is making a website for Kittlesby on all the essential information residents might need, such as various hours of operation, critical peoples emails, and upcoming events!

I am very interested in this position because I love being involved in Student Government and being in leadership positions. It pushes me out of my comfort zone to really reach out to everyone- not just my close friends. I love making projects and putting together presentations and I have had a lot of experience with those things not only just in classes in high school, but in leadership positions and Student Council. I love communicating with people and making sure that everything is as efficient and orderly as it can be. It sounds like a really exciting position and way to get involved in my dorm hall and to really increase my skills in both communication.
Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
I would say that I am an organized and disciplined person. I took high school academics and commitments very seriously. I loved being involved in many different things including varsity Basketball, choir, worship team/band, NHS, Student Council, and etc. I had many leadership positions within these commitments- President of both Choir and NHS, varsity Basketball captain, lead vocalist and keys for the band, etc. I love to learn and to increase my skills in everything I do because there is always more to learn about anything you do. I love being able to relay ideas and communicate with other people to get both input and correction in order for me to grow as a person and as a leader.
How would you ensure that residents are well-informed and involved in hall initiatives and programming?
I would make sure that events would be communicated both digitally (Snap chat, GroupMe, etc.) and physically (on posters, banners, etc.) I would definitely try to get the word around verbally too- I can do this through really getting to know more and more people in my dorm hall. I want to make sure I know as many people as possible- to really get to know them so I better know how to communicate with them and to get the word out there. I love being able to have events that help a community better get to know each other and I hope that I can be a part of that process of really uniting Kittelsby as a hall. I would try to not only advertise and get the word out there but I would make sure to try to make every single event that I can!

I love to get people excited about big events and fun activities like the one’s I would have to advertise to the residents of this hall.

How would you ensure that residents are well-informed and involved in hall initiatives and programming?
I would ensure that emails went out both weeks and days before the event actually happens. I would also talk to people in the halls and in passing around campus to raise awareness and excitement for the event.

I am interested in this position because I want to be able to connect with my peers who live in my hall. I want to help promote a fun and safe space for first-year students by advertising the programs in a way that the students are not afraid to participate. This position will help me enhance my communications and teamwork skills that can be carried on into the workforce. I want first years to enjoy their time of living in Kittelsby and have memorable moments from the programs they attended.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
I am a social person. I enjoy meeting new people and being able to get to know them better. I was vice president of my senior class in high school. I coordinated and advertised senior events. Those skills I learned from being vice president transfers to me being a good representation for hall communication officer.

How would you ensure that residents are well-informed and involved in hall initiatives and programming?
I would ensure that residents are well-informed and involved by having posters around stating what the programs and initiatives are, emailing the students to remind them of the upcoming programs, and talking to them in person about what they think and how they are feeling. It would be constant reminders in person or on social media because it’s nice to have a friendly face being the one to encourage you to participate in the programs and initiatives occurring in your dorm.

I enjoy graphic design and have experience with poster and logo making from high school art classes, and would enjoy a way to use them as I do not have any art classes this semester. I would love to use my skills in a meaningful way to improve the lives of Kittelsby residents and the hall as a whole. I also have experience in leadership positions that apply to this position.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
I served as President of my high school Spanish club senior year, which involved designing posters and advertising meetings on social media, in addition to creating engaging content and meetings for students. I also helped manage our club’s budget, which was used for cultural foods and outings. Because of this, I understand the hard work and patience it takes to get students consistently interested and involved and will be able to achieve that. I also created a highly successful toiletry drive at my high school for marginalized community members and used graphic design skills to make a poster to put up throughout the building.

How would you ensure that residents are well-informed and involved in hall initiatives and programming?
Not simply posters on the hall’s bulletin boards, but more direct and engaging content. For example, posters in strategic locations (such as bathroom mirrors), quick and easily readable communication through Remind 101 in addition to more informative emails, a social media presence, and the use of Google Surveys to get an accurate portrait of what initiatives and events residents are interested in would be greatly utilized. Finally, a sense of dorm spirit/pride is crucial in gaining involvement, so heightening that sense through incentives and/or fun events would be useful.

I am interested in being the Kittelsby Hall Council President because I posses the skills, interest, and passion necessary to hold such an esteemed position on campus. As soon as I heard that this position was an option, I knew I would be a good fit. Although I didn’t hold an office position in student government in high school, I am a natural leader in many other ways. I organized events in the music department at my school, I organized charity events and most importantly for this position, social events. I want to make my college experience and that of my peers and classmates an especially fun and memorable one.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
I am a music major. This is important because it means I am passionate, organized, and driven. Also, I am a first-year student so my evenings are mostly free for planning community events. Finally, I love listening to my peers, learning about their interests, and trying new things with passionate people.

What programs would you like to see in your hall this year?
I would like to see more community events open to the hall in the hall lounges. Events where we can meet people that have similar interests or try new things. For example, I love board games and I would love be teach new people about them. I’m sure many people have other similar opinions and feelings about the broad, niche interests of the St. Olaf community. Besides that, I would like to see a large thank you event for the Hall leadership (JC’s, RA’s, etc.) as well as one for the custodial staff.

College is a place for expanding one’s horizons, and while I am sure past programs have been fun, people tend to stick with the group of friends they already have. I want to make sure these programs are a place where students interact with people they normally wouldn’t get together with. Hence students will create new friendships throughout the entire year, not just in the beginning.

Tell us what we should know about you, when considering you for this position.
Something that has confused my peers in the past is that I am always one of the first to participate in a discussion and I always raise my hand in class, but I do not call myself an extrovert. Instead I say that I like to “show initiative” or “self advocate”. The difference between showing initiative and being extroverted is that when you show initiative you put yourself out there not just for the sake of doing so but to reach a goal or complete a task. As Hall President of Kittelsby I would show initiative by making sure I understand the needs and experiences of every resident and incorporating that knowledge into each meeting agenda.

Another important point is my experience as a coxswain in competitive rowing. The coxswain is responsible for relaying instructions from the coach to the crew in addition to adapting the instructions so that the athletes can gain the most out of them. This is perfect for the Inter-Hall Council Meetings and the meetings with the Hall Council Advisor. Every student is going to have their own perspectives and ideas about student life based on where they live, so I will use the communication skills I have developed to make sure Kittelsby residents are heard.

What programs would you like to see in your hall this year?
I have always been a fan of a classic game night set-up. I think it is a good compromise between extroverted and introverted activities; you get people out of their dorms, but it’s less intimidating than something like a karaoke machine. We can also organize arts and crafts programs where students can create decorations for their dorms/doors (we could do this multiple times a year and set themes based on the season). It would also be cool to, around finals time, work with a therapy dog company to help students relieve stress.

I want to major in political science and i believe this would give me great experience in this type of field. also, i was involved heavily in my high schools student council and love being in council meetings and having responsibility. i would love to represent my hall and speak up for those who dont feel like they can themselves. I want to help everyone make living here a great experience!

well, i am a natural leader. I was in student government since 2nd grade, being president twice, and public relations officer twice as well. apart from student government, I was a cheerleader for 6 years, and was captain my junior and senior year. I have a good grasp on how to lead others without being too pushy or bossy.

What programs would you like to see in your hall this year?
as a freshman, I am not very aware of all the different programs that may happen. However, i love group activities like game nights, movie nights, pancake breakfasts, vollunteer work, and others! i am very open minded, and if someone lets me know that they want something , i will work hard to make it happen!

What do you know about the Student Senate?
After meeting some of the SGA representatives at the co-curricular fair, I’ve come to learn that the Student Senate is a group of individuals who are determined to solve any problem that arises on campus. However, these students are also passionate about setting goals that are logical to the needs of the campus. It’s my understanding that these goals are in relation to things such as campus safety, sustainability and inclusion. SGA representative Nick Willcocks, tells me that Student Senate is passionate about creating a positive campus environment. Moreover, the Senate strongly supports mental health awarness and sexual assault prevention which are such important topics that require open dialogue.
Tell us why you are interested in this position.
I’m quite interested in becoming hall Senator because I feel passionate about creating and maintaining a positive environment on campus. This might sound cheesy but I feel so strongly that every student deserves an equal opportunity for a great education and experience here on campus. Because my father immigrated to the U.S, he’s faced many hardships in his transition. We both have encountered individuals which have discriminated against us. I will never forget the discomfort I felt growing up in a neighborhood that didn’t welcome me. Microaggressions that targeted race, gender, sexuality and religion were a part of my everyday life. However, because I’ve had this experience, I feel very passionatly about dismanteling the discrimination that is so deeply rooted in our society. I never want an Ole to feel as uncomfortable as I did in my own hometown. The St. Olaf campus should feel safe to everyone and should feel like home. If I were Hall Senator, I know I would do everything I could to provide support for everyone in Hilleboe Hall and throughout campus.
What skills/interests/etc. would you bring to this position?
I understand that the position of hall Senator could be somewhat demanding. However, my experience overseeing the student theater organization, Myswyken, has given me various management and planning tools I need to be successful. Through fundraisers, shows and events, I’ve been able to learn invaluable things such as: creating spreadsheets, managing time and how to diffuse conflict calmly. In addition to theater, I’m also interested in Political Science. Most mornings, you can find me at the caf drinking a cup of joe while keeping up with current events in the newspaper. I’m so passionate about the subject that I’m strongly considering majoring in the field. Furthermore, I’m thrilled to say that I’ve been accepted into the Public Affairs Conversation Program this fall. I believe my interest in policy, current events, and political theory would really aid me if I were to become the next hall Senator.
What is one thing you would like to see Senate address this year?
I’ve noticed It’s very difficult to meet individuals from different dorms, especially as a first year student. Different variables cause somewhat of a divide between the dorms. This is something that I’d like to see addressed by the Senate. Firstly, other than the pause dances, there aren’t many socializing events outside of the individual dorm “hall parties”. Furthermore, dorms become locked at 11:00pm to residents that live in external dorms. I’ve noticed that first year students have a very hard time getting to know upperclassmen because of these factors. I’d really like to see Senate address this problem. A solution could be to have more school-wide events all the while publicizing them very effectively. Or perhaps, there could be a fun event that gets first years and seniors together to open up the lines of communication between the two classes.

I am very thorough. If I don’t complete something on time or if I let someone down in some way I feel terrible, so I do everything in my power to avoid it. I rarely get super stressed out, though, even when I have a lot on my plate at one time. Some of that is due to my ability to organize.

What are some skills you possess that would be advantageous for managing hall finances?
I can work Excel pretty well. I’ve handled money before when I essentially ran a confectionary stand at the restaurant called The Mason Jar and Cupcake, where I’ve worked the past two years. I also have a pretty good ability to communicate, and I feel that my good relationship with my JC gives me someone in my corner that I can go to easily for questions.

When considering me for this position, student activities should consider that I will treat my duties with respect and strive to make sure everyone is welcome in Kitt and that the resident’s concerns and suggestions are considered and implemented by the council.

What are some skills you possess that would be advantageous for managing hall finances?
I have several skills that would be advantageous for managing hall finances. To start with I am very responsible when handling finances and will ensure that Kitt puts on the best hall activities without breaking the budget. In the past I have worked in an accounting office and in several student organizations in my high school where allocating money and handling finance was often part of my respective roles.

I believe that inclusion in any context plays a very vital role in mental health and overal , productivity. I am a UWC student from Waterford Kamhlaba, in Southern Africa and have this role at the core of my heart. When I went for my Senior school, I had a very difficult time surviving for the first six months. At first, I used to use my social background and culture shock as an excuse for feeling unwanted and unwelcome for a very long time. However, the truth is, the first time one is introduced into tertiary education, it can feel like they have been thrown into the deep-end. Despite how strongly willed, confident, friendly, intelligent and open minded one can be, there is always the need for someone to check on them. If not for my peer supporters, I would have had the racial and social class weight drain my soul to a point where being at school would have been unbearable. Social class divisions and racial discrimination are just a droplet in an ocean full of many different kinds of issues faced by students on a daily basis. Therefore because of my personal experiences and how I loathed how feeling alone or discriminated can affect one’s livelihood, including their academics, I would be honored to be a part of the team that advocates for inclusion, awareness and unity in Kittlesby.

How do you intend on encouraging and foster an inclusive environment in your residence hall?

Being an international student, i believe in the idea of making St. Olaf and mostly Kittlesby a home away from home for most of the residence. Taking up this leadership position is an opportunity to ensure that everyone feels that they are a part of the family and do not feel left out. I also believe that it is an opportunity to learn more about the people i am living with, create a safe environment that ensures that enables each one of us to express ourselves and ideas freely and be guaranteed that we are heard and accepted. This position is an opportunity to expand my work from the past 6 months working with young people at a leadership academy in Zimbabwe.

I am an easy going person, always with a smile plastered on my face. I am a motivational person and will always be there to uplift you on your dull days. I tend not to give up easily, i am driven by success in whatever i am doing. I really just enjoy making conversation and laughing.
How do you intend on encouraging and foster an inclusive environment in your residence hall?
Encouraging a sense of belonging among the students in a way that we create a family within our hall through various get together activities. This includes organizing hall events that accommodate everyone. We may have sessions that allow everyone to share how they are and if possible address the problems people could be facing. I believe that a relationship with whoever is representing you is essential, hence i will have an open door policy that encourages my fellow colleagues to freely share in case of any problems and be guaranteed that action will be taken on their issue after building a relationship with one another.
