Maggie Upjohn

Explain why you are interested in this position:

As the Gender and Sexuality Senator, I hope to be the bridge between the college and the gender and sexuality groups such as GLOW. I want to make sure that all of the students’ concerns are communicated during meetings. I would love to spread the word of all the interesting, fun events that the Women and Gender Studies Department and student groups hold. I would like to ensure that the communities are well represented in Senate and St. Olaf College as a whole.

What qualifications do you bring to this position?

I am currently the Intercampus Liaison on SGA, and from that position, I have learned the general process of how the St. Olaf student government works and would love to apply that knowledge in another role. While attending Carleton’s student government meetings, I’ve experienced different student cultures and how LGBT+ students work with CSA to address various concerns like gendered bathrooms vs gender neutral bathrooms. I would like to bring that background with me and expand upon it by collaborating with GLOW and other gender and sexuality groups.
I’ve had an internship working with the YWCA where I aided in empowering women by organizing community baby showers to promote family planning and safe sleep practices. I attended meetings that decided the best way to provide health, educational, and job opportunities for the underserved including minorities and women in southwest Michigan.
