Explain why you are interested in this position:

Being the Environmental Senator interests me because there is so much that we can do to make St. Olaf a more environmentally friendly place! I was excited that St. Olaf and Environmental Coalition were able to get composting in some of the school buildings and dorms and it is encouraging to see so much support for a more environmentally conscious St. Olaf. I believe that it’s time for Senate to step it up and take on a stronger position on environmental issues and I hope to be a part of that.

What qualifications do you bring to this position?

During this past year in Senate, I have learned a lot about how Senate works. My previous experience in Senate is a strong qualification for becoming the Environmental Senator because I understand first hand what it takes to get proposals passed and how to balance communication between the student body and faculty. I am also an Environmental Studies Major and I was a part of the Environmental Conversation, both of which give me a strong background and general understanding of environmental issues on campus and in the world beyond the Hill. Finally, I enjoy helping people and the environment, and I believe that having passion for this job is essential to working effectively as the Environmental Senator.

Explain why you are interested in this position:

Throughout my pursuit of a biology and environmental studies degree here at St. Olaf I have become increasingly passionate about advocacy concerning conservation and sustainability. This has led me to pursue research and careers surrounding these topics. I have always been passionate about ameliorating my environment and my community, and I hope through this position I will be able to assist the St. Olaf community in bettering its environmental knowledge and practices.

What qualifications do you bring to this position?

Although I have not directly held a position in Senate, I am currently holding positions on two separate SGA branches; I am one of the event coordinators on DISC, and I just became one of the marketing and communications officers for PAC after being a member-at-large for the fall semester of 2018. Because of this, I have a good understanding of how Senate operates. This understanding allows me to have a clear picture of what my role would be if I were to hold the position of Environmental Senator.

By the time next year rolls around, I will have completed the course Integration and Application of Environmental studies (a class whose entire purpose is acting as a liaison between the Northfield community and St. Olaf in terms of local environmental issues), as well as three other Academic Civic Engagement classes. Although these skills cannot be perfectly extrapolated from one scenario to the next, it shows that I have had ample experience engaging with community members in both an environmental and social context. Moreover, I have been active in my local community since high school by volunteering in clean-ups, educational sessions, and interning at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Thank you again for your consideration, and I assure that if I were elected to this position I would be able to dedicate ample time and knowledge to ensure that SGA is being environmentally aware and conscious of its impacts.

Explain why you are interested in this position:

I am interested in the position of Environmental Senator because I am passionate about encouraging St. Olaf students to practice sustainable and environmental behaviors. I think there is a need for an environmental liaison on campus to serve as a linkage between the environmental organizations on campus and the student government at St. Olaf. With this connection, we would be able to improve the sustainable habits of the college, as well as the students. I also am a strong believer in the connection between government and the environment. This position seems to be the perfect collaboration of the two sectors I am most energized by.

What qualifications do you bring to this position?

I am majoring in Environmental Studies (Social Science Track) and Political Science major. The actual classwork that I interact with everyday is directly connected to what the Environmental Senator position stands for. I am also a member of the Environmental Honor House and am planning to be one of the co-presidents for next years house. I have had the pleasure of putting on environmental house events throughout this past year, whether it be the flower pressing event or the recycled valentine’s day card event. I enjoy interacting with the student body at St. Olaf and meeting new people because of the events we have put on. I also have volunteered for the past two summers with an environmental non-profit organization based in my hometown of Traverse City, Michigan. The organization, FLOW, vouches for water conservation and preservation in the Great Lakes amidst pipelines being placed in the largest bodies of fresh water in the United States. Here at St. Olaf, I also serve as a Student Work Coordinator in the Admissions Officer, which provides me with useful leadership skills, while practicing cooperation and collaboration with my peers.
In addition to the technical qualifications, I also am a passionate person and a hard worker. I love to work with other people, creating something larger than any one of us could do on our own. I have a positive outlook on challenges, and I would love seeing the progress we could make together.

Explain why you are interested in this position:

I am interested in this position because I care for the environment and I want to learn more about making the campus a greener society, not just for the benefit for the campus but for the world as a whole. By making a change in the habits of people and influence their daily living for a better society then they can take these practices and values to their respective homes and make a difference there. Making one small change can influence a group then that is what I want to do. This position would allow me to group into the environmentalist that I am and want to expand on. Not only would I benefit for this position, so would the society because I am passionate about change and would like to see more done to make people see that every small thing has a huge impact to the environment as a whole.

What qualifications do you bring to this position?

I am currently part of environmental Coalition which has brought knowledge to me in how the school plans to introduce campus wide composting, which I hope to continue.
I am treasurer of the African House thus, I have skills on managing finances if need be.
Currently, I am member of Volunteer Network, and this gives me more insight into how the school works and I would like to try to make VN work more with the environment as well.
Going deeper into my life, in high school I was part of two organizations. The first that dealt with using recycled materials to make useful school items and the second being a student naturalist for my high school nature reserve. Thus, I have some background that delves into the environmental world and I feel capable for this position.
