Head Start at St. Olaf is a volunteer program that works with the Northfield branch of Head Start. Head Start is a federally funded preschool that focuses on the children of low income families, giving them the skills to succeed in kindergarten. The hours that students spend volunteering allows HeadStart to receive additional funding. The individual attention that volunteers provide to the students is critical to their development.
The greatest joy that results from volunteering at Head Start is the opportunity to be a part of the children’ personal growth and to encourage their creativity. Whether is is drawing pictures, playing dress up or just giving hugs, each volunteer has a special skill to give that the children adore. This semester, sixteen trained volunteers visit the preschool every week to dance and play and grow as leaders and teachers. Being a part of Head Start is not simply a volunteer opportunity; it is also a privilege!
