Awesome Club is a St. Olaf Volunteer Network Organization devoted to weekly interaction with students on the Autism Spectrum. We encourage social skills in a variety of settings that include: socializing over snacks, playing games, outdoor activities, bowling, activities in the Northfield community, and homework help. We also utilize resources the schools provide (such as IPads) to encourage independence in communication.

The other facet of our club is devoted to on-campus awareness and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorders. We put on fundraisers for the club, bring in speakers, plan interactive events, and collaborate with other St. Olaf Organizations to raise awareness and help Oles gain a greater understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Last year we teamed up with Supporting Special Needs to promote the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign to eradicate the r-word from our vocabulary. We also encouraged Oles to consider person-first language when applicable during this campaign.

We recently had our Halloween Party at both the middle school and high school! Our students take time to plan the parties, which included a variety of activities such as pumpkin carving, bingo, cookie decorating, and prize give aways! We have lots of fun ideas in store for the rest of the year and can’t wait to put them in action!
