Evaluates and works to improve internal practices of SGA and student senate.
Our goal is to evaluate and improve accessibility, transparency, and fairness within the internal practices of SGA and student senate through the following measures:
- We will evaluate the accessibility of SGA, focusing on the ability of SGA to be truly representative of the campus in its entirety, through focus groups* and surveys by the end of the fall 2018 semester. Based on our evaluation, during Spring 2019, we will make recommendations to improve SGA’s accessibility to the student body.
- We will evaluate transparency, focusing on consolidating communication across senate subcommittees and the campus at large, through focus groups and surveys by the end of the fall 2018 semester. Based on our evaluation, during Spring 2019, we will make recommendations to improve SGA’s transparency to the student body.
- We will evaluate the fairness of SGA, focusing on budget allocation, through focus groups, surveys, and investigation of past budgets and financial documents by the end of the fall 2018 semester. Based on our evaluation, during Spring 2019, we will make recommendations to improve the fairness of SGA’s budget allocation.
*focus group: a demographically diverse group of people assembled to participate in a guided discussion about a particular product before it is launched, or to provide ongoing feedback
Over Fall Semester and Interim, the Internal Affairs Subcommittee held several focus groups in order to gather information from the student body about the transparency, accessibility and fairness of Senate and SGA processes. We assessed the information obtained in these focus groups and used our findings to create a survey in conjunction with the Senate Investigators Subcommittee which was sent out to the entire student body in February. The IA Subcommittee also created a second survey which was tailored specifically to Senators and was sent out in March. The purpose of these surveys is to gather information about larger trends in the way students perceive Senate processes.
Throughout the remainder of Spring Semester, we will analyze our survey findings and identify trends. Using this information, we will create a list of recommendations to improve the transparency, accessibility, and fairness of Senate and SGA processes. We will present our findings and suggestions to SGA leadership and the Student Senate. The Internal Affairs Subcommittee will also create a framework for the implementation of our recommendations, and as time allows, begin this process.
